Celebrated on October 31 Halloween was incepted in Ireland in the ancient era. The belief goes on that this unique festival has its roots from the Christian’s All Saints Day. Its wondrous impact is in its scary practices. In the Irish tradition, this festival is called Samhain (or Syawn). It is significant due to the timing when harvesting season concludes. Having been derived from a typical theme, celebration of Halloween is actually a protective shield from evil spirits which invade peace of living beings on this special day at a time when the layer between dead and alive become thin and evil spirits try to enter in the human world for creating devastation. Although it is celebrated in much fun no authenticity of its belief is searched by now.

It is presumed that evil spirits are restless souls of those who couldn’t live longer and died with unfinished ambitions. As they might do resisting acts in frustration by bringing gloom for the living beings in the form of famines and destroying the crops, best measures are done to keep them away and unique strategies are developed to prevent invasion. The religious heads offer peculiar rituals like throwing animal skeletal remains at the bonfires so that spirits can’t cross the line. Amusingly, no complete animal is offered. Why it is not done is a mystery? While worshippers perform religious deities, their followers do dramatic activities by wearing scary costumes so that evil souls get hallucinated and confused.

Nowadays, the tradition of wearing scary, ghoulish costumes continue. Every October, costumes retailer would have a roaring good business selling all sorts of scary suits. Many of their customers are from the young ones, who would go trick or treating on Halloween’s night. Of course, this portion of the celebration stems from the age old tradition of making offerings to appease these spirits and these days, it would be these young spirits who are the one needing to be appeased. The adults meanwhile would contend with being the ones handing out – no, not animal farm remains – sweets, chocolates and confectioneries, and letting the youngsters have all the fun.

Do they? Not really, of course.
